A NEW SPECIES OF Halicyclops (Copepoda, Cyclopoida, Halicyclopinae) FROM AN ESTUARINE SYSTEM OF THE CARIBBEAN COAST OF COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
FUENTES-REINÉS,Juan M.; SUÁREZ-MORALES,Eduardo.
ABSTRACT Plankton samples obtained from the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, an extensive estuarine system in northern Colombia, yielded adult male and female specimens of an undescribed halicyclopine cyclopid copepod of the genus Halicyclops. Cyclopid copepods are frequently found in freshwater and transitional habitats. Members of the subfamily Halicyclopinae are chiefly brackish water forms with a few freshwater species. The new species described herein is assignable to the group of species "F" of Halicyclops (sensu Pesce, 2018) with a 2333 exopodal spine formula. Currently, this group contains five species and one subspecies. Halicyclopsgutierrezi sp. n. can be distinguished from its known congeners by the absence of an anal operculum, the relative...

Absorption efficiency in post-larvae of the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei fed a diet of marine yeast from mangrove mudflats Boletín de Investigaciones
Solorzano-Reyes,Fulvia; Velásquez-López,Patricio C..
ABSTRACT The present study investigated marine yeast as a food source in the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Yeast absorption efficiency was determined by measuring the proportion of organic matter assimilated by shrimp post-larvae (PLs). The yeast was isolated and propagated in the laboratory from a sediment sample obtained from a mangrove mudflat. Shrimp post-larvae at six stages, from PL-5-days-old to PL-35-days-old were fed exclusively with yeasts, at three concentrations (1.5 × 105, 3 × 105, 5 × 105cell/mL). The overall average of yeast absorption was around 65.85 ± 11.42 %. The two-way analysis of variance ANOVA (p < 0.05) showed that the efficiency of yeast absorption was not affected by the concentrations of yeasts as a food source:...

An evaluation of the economic viability of environmental offsets in the saltworks industry Ciência Rural
Fernandes,Rogério Taygra Vasconcelos; Pinto,Aruza Rayana Morais; Fernandes,Raimunda Thyciana Vasconcelos; Oliveira,Jônnata Fernandes de; Novaes,José Luís Costa.
ABSTRACT: The extraction of sea salt depends on the occupation of large areas at the estuary banks, many of them inserted in Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs). Thus, the objective was to evaluate the economic viability of Environmental Offsets (EO) as an alternative to the unoccupied PPAs in the saltworks. In order to do so, 27 solar saltworks installed in the region of the Brazilian White Coast were evaluated for the occupation of PPAs - measured using images from satellite, georeferenced, vectored with corresponding PPA bands generated - and estimated to EO (Impact Degree x Sum of the investments necessary to implement the project) and Economic Impact (Net Present Value, with long-term interest rate of 7%) of vacating PPAs. It was considered that EO...

Application of spot data to a base-line ecological study of the mahakam delta mangroves (east kalimantan, indonesia) ArchiMer
Dutrieux, Eric; Denis, Jacques; Populus, Jacques.
The objective of this study is to explain the spatial and temporal distribution of the vegetal communities of the Mahakam delta, chiefly on the basis of its physical and chemical characteristics. The delta is at present subjected to intense oil exploitation, and it is necessary to describe the situation on the site and its natural evolution in arder to be able to evaluate the damage that accidentai oil spillage could cause. The authors provide elements to define the sensitive zones whose protection should be a matter of priority. SPOT imagery was chosen as the tool allowing such an approach on a delta measuring 1 500 km2 SPOT satellite images of the Mahakam delta show that different plant communities succeed one another bath in time and in space. The...

Ardra profiles of bacteria and archaea in mangrove sediments with different levels of contamination in the estuarine complex of Paranaguá, Brazil BABT
Ribeiro,Catherine Gérikas; Steffens,Maria Berenice Reynaud; Etto,Rafael Mazer; Galvão,Carolina Weigert; Martins,César de Castro; Pedrosa,Fábio de Oliveira; Kolm,Hedda Elisabeth.
The mangrove's sediments from the coastal areas under human activities may contain significant contaminations by hydrocarbons, even when there are no visual evidences of it. The microorganisms are essential to these ecosystems, especially in the control of their chemical environment. Sediment samples were collected in two regions under different environment conditions (pristine and contaminated) of the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (Paranaguá Bay and Laranjeiras Bay), Brazil. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined by the GC-FID to assess the status of contamination of the studied areas. The total DNA was extracted from these samples. The 16S rRNA gene was amplified by the PCR reactions with the pair of primers 21F and 958R for the archaeal domain, and 27F...

Bacterial diversity in relatively pristine and anthropogenically-influenced mangrove ecosystems (Goa, India) BJM
Fernandes,Sheryl Oliveira; Kirchman,David L.; Michotey,Valérie D.; Bonin,Patricia C.; LokaBharathi,P.A..
To appreciate differences in benthic bacterial community composition at the relatively pristine Tuvem and the anthropogenically-influenced Divar mangrove ecosystems in Goa, India, parallel tag sequencing of the V6 region of 16S rDNA was carried out. We hypothesize that availability of extraneously-derived anthropogenic substrates could act as a stimulatant but not a deterrent to promote higher bacterial diversity at Divar. Our observations revealed that the phylum Proteobacteria was dominant at both locations comprising 43-46% of total tags. The Tuvem ecosystem was characterized by an abundance of members belonging to the class Deltaproteobacteria (21%), ~ 2100 phylotypes and 1561 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) sharing > 97% similarity. Brachyuran crab community structure and associated sediment reworking activities in pioneer and young mangroves of French Guiana, South America ArchiMer
Aschenbroich, Adelaide; Michaud, Emma; Stieglitz, Thomas; Fromard, Francois; Gardel, Antoine; Tavares, Marcos; Thouzeau, Gerard.
This study in French Guiana evaluates the changes of crab assemblages and their bioturbation activities between mangrove early stages (pioneer and young mangrove) and within stages by taking their spatial heterogeneity (tidal channels, flat areas, pools) into account. The results show differences in crab assemblage structure between and within the early stages of mangrove in relation to microhabitat and sediment characteristics. The sediment reworking rates are a function of the biomass or density of particular species (Ucides cordatus, Uca cumulanta) and burrower functional groups. Crab species or functional interaction mediate changes in sediment reworking rates suggesting the need to consider entire benthic communities rather than single species. This...

Characteristics of meiofauna in extreme marine ecosystems: a review ArchiMer
Zeppilli, Daniela; Leduc, Daniel; Fontanier, Christophe; Fontaneto, Diego; Fuchs, Sandra; Gooday, Andrew J.; Goineau, Aurelie; Ingels, Jeroen; Ivanenko, Viatcheslav N.; Kristensen, Reinhardt Mobjerg; Neves, Ricardo Cardoso; Sanchez, Nuria; Sandulli, Roberto; Sarrazin, Jozee; Sorensen, Martin V.; Tasiemski, Aurelie; Vanreusel, Ann; Autret, Marine; Bourdonnay, Louis; Claireaux, Marion; Coquille, Valerie; De Wever, Lisa; Rachel, Durand; Marchant, James; Toomey, Lola; Fernandes, David.
Extreme marine environments cover more than 50% of the Earth’s surface and offer many opportunities for investigating the biological responses and adaptations of organisms to stressful life conditions. Extreme marine environments are sometimes associated with ephemeral and unstable ecosystems, but can host abundant, often endemic and well-adapted meiofaunal species. In this review, we present an integrated view of the biodiversity, ecology and physiological responses of marine meiofauna inhabiting several extreme marine environments (mangroves, submarine caves, Polar ecosystems, hypersaline areas, hypoxic/anoxic environments, hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, carcasses/sunken woods, deep-sea canyons, deep hypersaline anoxic basins [DHABs] and hadal zones)....

Combined Effects of Temperature and Salinity on Larval Development of the Mangrove Crab Parasesarma catenata Ortman, 1897 (Brachyura: Sesarmidae) OceanDocs
Mwaluma, J.; Nogueira Mendes, R.; Raedig, C.; Emmerson, W.; Paula, J..
The larval stages of the mangrove crab Parasesarma catenata were reared in the laboratory from eggs of females collected in the Mgazana estuary, South Africa. Survival and duration of larval stages were tested for the combined effects of temperature and salinity in a factorial design experiment, using three females each with two replicates of 15 larvae per combination. Combinations were made from five temperature (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 ºC) and four salinity values (15, 25, 35 and 45 ‰). Results were tested by ANOVA and multiple regression was applied to generate contour models by polynomial equation. It was found that P. catenata larvae develop optimally in near to seawater salinity at a temperature of around 25 ºC. These results support the assumption...

Community Structure and Productivity of Mangroves at Nabq, Red Sea OceanDocs
McCallum, J.N.; Paterson, L.; Greenwood, M.F.D..
Tree and pneumatophore height and density of Avicennia marina were measured along a point -intersection/band transect at Nabq, Red Sea, to establish possible zonation patterns amongst these mangrove characteristics. There was a significant increase in pneumatophore height and density landwards to seawards. Tree density decreased significantly down the transect. Graphical analysis showed an increase in tree height followed by a decrease at the seaward edge. Investigation of a theoretical increase in productivity (biomass) down the shore by leaf index calculation (leaf index = average leaf area x number of leaves per station) was inconclusive from data obtained.

Delimitation and classification of coastal wetlands: Implications for the environmental management of the Colombian Continental Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Millán,Santiago; Rodríguez-Rodríguez,Jenny Alexandra; Sierra-Correa,Paula.
ABSTRACT This article describes the cartographic layer construction process of Colombian Caribbean coastal wetlands at a scale of 1:100,000 and the results obtained in terms of their quantification and typing. Two cartographic layers were constructed and subsequently joined, one of the permanent water bodies and another of temporary water bodies and associated coverages. The layers were generated by multitemporal analysis of 45 Landsat 8-OLI satellite images, based on the NDVI index, uncertainty models by superposition of cartographic attributes, and a flood frequency consultation model on ALOS PALSAR 1 images. As a result, 576,279 ha of coastal wetlands were delimited (1.9 % of total wetlands in Colombia), of which 20.4 % are within protected areas. The...
